Your Science, Fiction, and the Utopian Impulse" Module Project

This assignment is due at the end of Week 3

Step 1: Pretend that the technology in the story already exists AND further pretend that you are an expert who has been invited to participate in a podcast that explains Calliagnosia to the public. Your job is to explain the technology in terms that any adult could understand and then outline the key issues and debates around the use of this technology.

Step 2: Plan a 20-minute podcast segment, and assign roles to each teammate

Step 3: Write a script or outline

Step 4: Record and submit your episode – be creative but scientifically accurate as possible. Include sources for the episode comments section and (where necessary) acknowledge when you are extrapolating or inventing scientific knowledge or processes.

This assignment calls for creative thinking; that is, you and your team will (1) compile information (from the story, from your own research, and from your own experience, impressions and values), and (2) combine this accumulated information into a new pattern. You’ll create something new in the world, a machine made of words (and possibly images) that couldn’t exist without you and that didn’t exist before you joined the conversation about this wicked problem.
